International Day of Medical Physics 2017

On Tuesday 7 November 2017, the IAEA joined all medical physicists around the world and the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP) in the celebration of the 5th International Day of Medical Physics (IDMP).

This day has been chosen for the annual celebration since it is an important date for medical physicists; on this day, 150 years ago (1867), Marie Sklodowska-Curie, known for her pioneering research on radioactivity, was born in Poland. For this reason, IOMP will focus this year on women and medical physics (Medical Physics: Providing a Holistic Approach to Women Patients and Women Staff Safety in Radiation Medicine).

On 7 November 2017 the IAEA hosted a panel discussion at its Headquarters in Vienna with the title Medical Physics in Cancer Treatment: Supporting Women’s Health. During this event, experts from different countries and from different disciplines highlighted the contributions of medical physics to support women’s health, through the use of radiation in diagnosis and treatment of the most common cancers among the female population. The slides and the programme of this panel discussion are available for download on this page.

A video connection was established with Jaipur (India) with IOMP (represented by Mr Slavik Tabakov, President, and Mr John Damilakis, Chair of the Education and Training Committee). Both representatives were attending the joint 17th Asia Oceania Congress of Medical Physics (AOCMP) and 38th Annual Conference of Association of Medical Physicists of India (AMPICON)

A video connection was also established with the current students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Medical Physics (MMP), run jointly, with the support of the IAEA, by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and the University of Trieste.
