Born in Italy, Prof. Maurizio Dondi graduated from the School of Medicine of the University of Bologna in 1977 where he received his post-graduate degrees in Nuclear Medicine and Cardiology. In 1996 he was appointed as Professor of Imaging Application in Cardiovascular Diseases at the Post-graduate Institute of the University of Bologna, Italy. With a broad vision of health care needs and the role of radiological sciences (including nuclear medicine, diagnostic radiology and medical physics) he was appointed Director of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging at his institution. In the professional field, his main interest has revolved around the development and implementation of nuclear cardiology techniques in the developing world.
In 2004, he joined the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as Section Head of Nuclear Medicine in the Division of Human Health, a position held until statutory retirement. Before and during his tenure at the IAEA, Prof. Dondi participated in numerous international research projects, and authored more than 200 publications on peer reviewed international scientific journals and several chapters and books.
Professor Dondi is currently serving as an international consultant of the IAEA and other UN organizations.
